Ebb-Dunedin is hoping to become New Zealand’s first modernist boutique hotel. We find out more about this stunning property and why it’s certain to live long in the memory of every guest who stays there.

Boutique hotel meets modern art

The coastal city of Dunedin is known for the rich nature surrounding it, as well for its happening art scene. This makes it the ideal spot for New Zealand’s first modernist boutique hotel, Ebb-Dunedin, which is slated to launch in early 2021.

It’s being overseen by Dunedin family Property Investment Group CL Hotels and the appointed builder Stewart’s Construction, in collaboration with architect Gary Todd and Sydney-based Indyk Architects, which handled the interiors. Meanwhile, creative agency MAUD led the creative brand direction.

A story of art and atriums

A striking facade defined by black steel structures and glass cladding, covered in a semi-transparent artwork by nationally acclaimed Dunedin artist Simon Kaan, is sure to draw the attention of all passers-by.

Indoors, a spacious art-filled atrium will welcome guests and create the illusion of being in an exhibition. Lush greenery, meanwhile, will add a sense of closeness to nature.

The 27 spacious rooms and two-bedroom penthouse suite are spread out over four floors and all boast floor-to-ceiling windows. There will also be a cafe/wine bar next to the atrium garden, and guest lounges perfect for sampling a cocktail or two on every level.

Interestingly, the design, materials and colour schemes are intended to be a strong nod to Dunedin’s Scottish and Maori heritage. Indeed, the black and white stone, natural oak elements and tactile layers should all combine to create a sense of escapism, inviting guests to kick back and relax in unique surroundings.
